Dean's dedication to raise Awareness & Funds for Ovarian Cancer Research

My wife Judith was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in September 2015 at the age of 79.

After several chemo treatments, Judith was in remission until May 2016, however, a CT scan in July 2016 showed 9 tumors of various sizes had developed, resulting in more chemo.

A CT scan in January 2017 showed a minor reduction in tumors. Then in February another CT scan showed a 40% increase in only 5 weeks.

With a complication sadly Judith lost her battle and passed away peacefully on the 8th March 2017, 14 days after celebrations for her 82nd birthday with our family.

We met on a blind date on Good Friday in 1954, what a great Good Friday. In 1956 we were married and were married for almost 61 years. With the loss of Judith I was lost. So in May 2017 I decided that the rest of my days would be spent in Raising Awareness & Funds for Ovarian Cancer Research. Ovarian Cancer is known as the ‘Women’s Silent Killer’ and does not receive the same coverage and funds as some other cancers.

I decided to organise an Event in her memory, so began ‘Judith’s Walk’ hoping it would become an Annual Event.

February 25th 2018 was the first event which has been successful to continue each year.

Judith’s Legacy, organises annual events under Judith’s Legacy Banner such as – Judith’s Walk, Judith’s Breakfast, Auction, Seaford Bunnings Sausage Sizzles and I am regularly at shopping centers promoting Judith’s Legacy and future fundraising events. I sell Judith’s Pens, Judith’s wine (a Shiraz & Chardonnay – DogRidge), a friend knits Beanies, all contributing to Judith’s Legacy. There are also Judith’s Legacy Collection Containers in many local businesses.

Aldinga Shores Retirement Village Library (2009)

We were requested to look after the books in the Village library, we said yes, we categorize the books when we receive donations from residents and friends. Residents borrow the books and there is a returns box, which I empty two or three times a week returning the books on the shelves. As we see fit will cull them sometimes receiving books we already have on the shelves, some books donated that from experience we know residents aren’t interested in, and donate them to various organisations and charities. There are about 1,500 books to select from, there is 4 small tables where I put out a selection of books, new books to the library to choose from, Australian or South Australian authors, and different categories e.g. ladies crime, saga etc.

Besides books there are board games & puzzles, again all been donated.
A TV, with a good selection of DVD’s also donated, billiard table, table & chairs and lounge chairs, and a great sunny room to seat, relax and read etc.

In 2016 Management named the Shores library

Rotary Club of Seaford

How I become involved with Rotary, my first contact was at the opening of Chris Pickton’s new office at Seaford Meadows where women from the Seaford Club were doing the BBQ. I approached them with my first draft of Judith’s Walk for raising Awareness for Ovarian Cancer.

My draft was taken to the board, and I was invited to a meeting in Fiona Biedermann’s garage explained my proposal and the members agreed to support Judith’s Walk, by doing the BBQ. This they have done at some of Judith’s Walk’s & Judith’s Car Boot Sales.

In 2018 as of the Rotary Club of Seaford support, I decided to become a Member, and Fiona, inducted me as her first task on her day of becoming President, 08 07 2018. Attend most meetings and volunteer for their fundraising events when available.
